Me and Miss P like to walk in different places, so we can look (or sniff) at different things as we slowly stroll along.   We (especially me) like to walk along on cleared sidewalks, so I don’t slip and fall on the ice.   Downtown seemed to be the place to go today, and we looked at a number of former religious buildings.    These ones have been re-purposed.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This building might look like it was once a church, but it’s not.   It was the original synagogue, now it’s an architect’s office.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This sturdy brick building was built for a large congregation, now vanished.   It was some sort of art place for a while, but now it is home to an alternative free newspaper.KODAK Digital Still Camera

This former Catholic church is sandwiched between businesses.   The last time I was in there it was an attorney’s office, now it is vacant awaiting the next tenant.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Yet another office space, but it’s a great looking building.   The congregation must have thought that they would need and occupy this forever so they built it to last.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This final one has had the most interesting re-purposing of all of these.  It was formerly a restaurant, and now it has been converted (in more than one sense) into a church!    So this place has gone full circle.

Recipe

It’s been a snowy week, so it’s a great time to make comfort food, those ordinary easy recipes that remind you of home.    This recipe is courtesy of my gran.   It is undated, but I asked her for it when I was a young woman, so I have had this piece of paper for at least 40 years (perhaps more).

recipe

Gran had stopped school when she was 15 to work as a factory girl, and she did not write much, so it is a very minimal recipe.  She liked it because it is dirt simple to make, unlike some of her other recipes.    I saw an almost identical recipe on the internet today, so it is still popular.  And it comes from Kentucky.

Batter ingredients:

1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar (this is really a lot, I usually use 3/4 cup or less), 1 cup of milk, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt.   Mix this together to make a batter.

Melt one stick of butter in the bottom of your baking dish.   What size?   I use a 10″ round corning ware pan, otherwise I think the batter is too thick.    Pour the batter over the melted butter.

Drain a large can of peaches or cherries.   Make sure they are well drained.    Place the fruit evenly over the batter, it will rise up and cover the fruit as it cooks.   Bake at 350 F for 45 to 50 minutes, or until it is golden brown to the very center.

I used too many peaches in this version, because I had thawed out a large sack of them.   But it was delicious, and perfect for eating on a cold snowy day.

My gran is the woman on the right, my beloved grandmother is the woman on the left, and that’s my older brother in the middle.

Big

There are a number of slogans about size, but, “Bigger is Better” is fairly common.   Miss P and I were out running errands and I happened to really notice the name of our first destination.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

It’s not just R (that could be pirate supplies), but BIG R.   It’s a great place to shop for duck lures to train your dog to retrieve.   (Miss P is allegedly a retriever, but she is total crap at it).   It is a farm and ranch store, so they sell equipment, clothes, work boots, guns, all sorts of unusual items (like those duck lures) and most importantly sacks of feed.   So I got three sacks to stock up before the next snow storm.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Then there was this store across the parking lot, not just 5, but BIG 5.   I have no idea why they chose this name, I’ve heard of the Big 10 (a college American football league), but who are the Big 5?

KODAK Digital Still Camera

On the way home we passed this store, which is both BIG and has LOTS (of stuff).  This store has a large selection of weird and unusual items as they purchase close outs of unsold merchandise from other retailers.   So, you never know what’s in there unless you look.    And look really hard, it’s often piled up in random order.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

After all the running around to get our errands done, me and Miss P were pretty hungry, so we skipped the BIG and went for Little. 🙂

Another reason this town exists is because of fresh mountain air.  Once upon a time, before automobiles, people used to move here because of the clean, clear air.    Especially for persons with tuberculosis, because at that time fresh air and rest was the only cure.

tb3

This vintage scene recently appeared in the newspaper.   Note the Indian rug in the middle of the room.   This is the west after all.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Over the years most of the original TB sanitariums have developed into hospitals   But this former sanitarium is now the administration building of the local university.  The extension on the front was a sleeping porch, the windows would be open year round for that healthful air.

tb6

This photo from the 1918 also appeared in our newspaper.   This sanitarium had 35 beds, which I assume means that there were 35 little houses.   And there are still some remaining around the city.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

They can still be spotted in various places around town.  This one is at the entrance to a tourist attraction.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

These ones are also in a tourist area, and they remind me of elf houses (assuming that elves are real).

tb4

And as recently as 1940, the air was still pristine enough to draw people here.  Of course now there is medicine to treat TB.   Now people with allergies and asthma worry about the quality (or lack thereof) of our air.

Food Memories

For Christmas one of my brothers sent me this:

KODAK Digital Still Camera

a Krakowska, from Piekutowski’s.   It’s a ham based sausage, and Pope John Paul II said it is the best Krakowska outside of Krakow.  This sausage maker is located in the old neighborhood in North St. Louis, and I have been eating this for as long as I can remember.   When I lived in the neighborhood it was a working-class area with mostly Poles and Germans.   The older generation were good friends with my grandparents, and when my brother went in to buy this, the old guy was there helping out.

Another food I associate with St. Louis and love is White Castle hamburgers, also an acquired taste.  They are tiny square hamburgers, steamed with onions and served on tiny square buns.   There is a White Castle right near the St. Louis airport and it is always my first stop when I fly in.   Sometimes it is my last stop as well, I get frozen ones to take home.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

When I was a young teenager going to Steak ‘n Shake late at night was the thing to do.  It was a real diner, with hamburgers freshly cooked on grill and served on thick white plates with a side order of fries (chips).   Now it is a chain, and this one is located here.  They are going for a retro vibe, everyone still wears a white dress shirt with a black bow tie and a paper hat.  But it is not nearly as special, there was that intoxicating freedom of being out and about late at night when I was young.   And I can’t replicate that.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

But they still make a pretty decent hamburger, and me and Miss P enjoyed this one today.

Presents

Christmas presents can be an emotional minefield.  As a kid there is that one thing that you really, really want, like the bb gun in “A Christmas Story” or a pony.   Very often that is the thing that you are not going to get.  In my family we tended to get a toy or two and utilitarian necessities, like underwear and socks.

presents

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Miss Revlon was the doll to get in 1960, before that upstart Barbie took over the doll market.  After Christmas in school, some kids would brag about how much loot they pulled in, so we would always lie, or at least exaggerate.  Halloween is a much more egalitarian holiday.

presents1

My brother and I went to one of the big downtown department stores (when such things existed) and had our picture taken with Santa.   We gave the picture to my white gran for Christmas, and she cut it down to this size.

As an adult, present buying has it’s own difficulties.   First:  as adults we have the ability to go out and buy whatever it is we want, except maybe that new BMW.    We don’t actually need anything, so you have to be more ingenious in figuring out what people might actually  like.   Secondly: there are those persons that you are obliged to give a gift to, but don’t really know, so you fall back on the sweet stuff, cookies, homemade candy or even fruitcake.   The recipient either eats this and lives to regret it, or re-gifts it onward.   Miss P likes to give out sacks of homemade dog biscuits, and so far no one has ever complained.    Okay, she doesn’t really want to give them out, she would much prefer to eat every single one herself.   But a girl (dog) has to watch her weight.

So Merry Christmas to All and God Bless Us Everyone.

The county courthouse is always a symbol of civic pride and importance, and our local courthouse is no exception.  Finished in 1903, it was made to last through the ages.   And it has, but the courthouse functions moved across the street years ago, now it is a local history museum.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The courtrooms were beautiful, a great place to be tried.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The winged figure isn’t an angel or winged Justice, she is there to represent Gold, Silver had to settle for the back wall.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

It still has the manually operated elevator.   The courthouse was the scene of a made for TV movie some years ago because of it’s vintage charm.   My friend the elevator repairman was hired to stand around for a week or so just to make sure the elevator went at the exact speed the movie makers needed.   (It was a great payday).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

At first glance the inside of the building looks like marble, but it’s just a very fancy paint job.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Inside there are remnants of the olden days, like this buggy.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Or this room from a writer’s house, which was torn down years ago.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Then there is this rather frightened looking beaver, forever trapped in a display with a beaver hat.   I think he might be my favorite exhibit.

Arcade

It was a lovely week, with unseasonably warm weather, so me and Miss P went over to Manitou Springs to the arcade.    It features coin operated rides and games, from the 1930’s up to the very latest.   We strolled around the outside and she kept a sharp eye peeled for any lost food.

It’s a great place to visit and drop a bunch of quarters.   They have a bit of something for everyone, from a old west stagecoach to the space shuttle.

Here’s the Penny Pincher.

If you hear hoofbeats in the night, think zebra.

There’s vintage Skeeball lanes inside.

There’s even a friendly dragon.

Many places have bi-lingual signs, but this is the first one I’ve every seen that recognizes ‘dog’ as a language. 😉

Miss P

Miss P just had her 12th birthday.  Of course I have no idea when she was actually born, but she came into our life on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so that is the official holiday.   She is not doing well and my veterinarian suggested that I count my blessings and make a list of all the things that make her a great dog.

tiara

She was awarded the title “Miss Monkey Paws” of 2004, 2005, 2006 etc. because she likes to use her paws for everything!

KODAK Digital Still Camera

She has a great nose for mischief and can smell a bit of dropped food (like this desiccated pizza) at 50 feet and if she finds it, it’s hers! (Unfortunately, she can also detect dead birds, rabbit poo and other revolting things).

She has always been a ‘wiggle butt’, when she is happy she doesn’t just wag her tail, she gets everything moving.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

She loves the water and is part-mermaid.   She has a wading pool in summer, and will try and bite the stream of water from a hose. Although she tries, she has never been able to stop the evil hose monster, no matter how hard she bites it.

Squeaky toys are also evil, and need to be destroyed as quickly as possible.   Her latest birthday present lasted 4 minutes.

She has beautiful naturally curly hair, especially right after her bath.

And people often comment on her beautiful face.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

That’s because they don’t see this face, when she has been using her monkey paws to get into trouble. 😉   She is my perfect partner in crime, and I love her.

Trail

Today after Miss P got her acupuncture we went walking on the trail by the creek.  It was a beautiful day after the recent snow and cold, perfect for a stroll.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here’s a view of Pulpit Rock, with the new free standing (not attached to a hospital) emergency room that’s being built in front of it.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The trail is a wide paved path, with this inadvertent art created by nature and lazy builders.   There are miles of trails, and one can go all the way to downtown from my house.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

It’s prettier when the trees are green and leafy.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

But I probably would not have been able to spot this fellow.  (Okay Miss P spotted him first).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Or his doe.   They were just hanging out by the water, then they got up and trotted down the path with the rest of the joggers.
